Latency

← Back to Industry Terms

Latency is the elapsed time between a defined input or event and a specified system output or response. In a detection-and-alert system, it may refer to the interval from a detectable condition to an alert, whereas processing latency or network latency measures only part of that sequence.

End-to-end latency can include sensor capture, processing, communication, and output activation. It is distinct from detection accuracy, update frequency, and the physical time a vehicle takes to slow down. A meaningful specification identifies the start and end points, test conditions, and whether the value is typical or a validated upper bound; cloud dashboard updates and local alerts may follow different timing paths.
