Ultra-Wideband (UWB) is a radio technology used in distance measurement and positioning applications, including industrial proximity detection and tracking. UWB ranging systems can estimate distance from signal travel time, while positioning systems use additional measurements and infrastructure to determine location. Industrial applications include proximity detection and indoor tracking. Accuracy and coverage depend on system design, installation, and environmental conditions.
Ranging estimates how far apart compatible radio devices are, often using the time taken for signals to travel between them. Determining position requires additional information, such as measurements associated with known reference locations.
In an industrial proximity application, distance information can be compared with configured conditions to support a warning or other response. The radio measurement and the connected vehicle-control function remain separate parts of that arrangement.
UWB operates differently from visual recognition: it communicates with compatible devices rather than identifying an untagged person from an image. Obstructions and site conditions can still affect performance, so installation and coverage need application-specific assessment.
