Edge AI is the processing of artificial intelligence models on devices or local computing equipment close to where data is generated. In industrial camera systems, local processing can analyze images and trigger configured responses without sending every frame to a remote cloud service. Cloud reporting, remote management, and model updates may still require network connectivity.
In an industrial setting, a camera or nearby processor may perform inference, which means applying a trained model to incoming data. This local analysis is distinct from training or updating the model.
Keeping inference close to the data source can reduce dependence on sending information to a remote service for every decision. The actual response time and offline behavior still depend on the hardware, software, and connected control arrangement.
An edge-based detection system may coexist with cloud reporting. Local event detection, remote dashboards, storage, and fleet-wide analysis can therefore have different connectivity requirements within the same deployment.
