Computer vision is a field of artificial intelligence that analyzes images and video to identify objects, movements, and visual information. In industrial safety applications, it can be used to detect pedestrians, vehicles, and configured conditions within a camera’s field of view. Detection performance depends on the model, image quality, visibility, and operating environment.

In a warehouse, image analysis may identify a person, follow a vehicle through successive frames, or assess whether an object occupies a defined area. These are different analytical tasks and may require different models or rules.

Recognizing an object is also different from assessing the risk associated with it. A person detected near a forklift becomes meaningful in context, including the monitored zone, movement, separation, and conditions used to define an event.

Computer vision does not create visibility through every obstruction. Camera positioning and image quality influence what can be analyzed, while other sensing technologies can provide additional information in a layered industrial system.
