Total incident rate (TIR) is a measure of a defined set of incidents relative to an exposure base, with the included cases and calculation basis stated explicitly. The abbreviation is not used uniformly: some organizations use it for total recordable injury and illness incidence, while others apply a broader or different incident scope.
When TIR is explicitly defined using the same recordable cases and hour basis as TRIR, the two rates are equivalent. Otherwise, the figures are not directly comparable. Reports should state the full term, included case types, workforce, time period, and multiplier, rather than treating every reported incident, first-aid case, or near miss as an OSHA-recordable case.
