OSHA 1910.178

← Back to Industry Terms

OSHA 1910.178 is the US general industry standard governing the design, maintenance, use, and operator training requirements for covered powered industrial trucks. It addresses covered equipment such as forklifts, platform lift trucks, and motorized hand trucks, with requirements concerning design, fire protection, maintenance, use, and operator training.

The standard covers operator competence, truck and workplace training topics, operating practices, loading, and equipment examination. For example, it requires travel at a speed that permits safe stopping and requires operators to slow down and sound the horn at cross aisles and other locations where vision is obstructed. Trucks must be examined before being placed in service and at least daily, with additional examination requirements for round-the-clock use.

Connected alerts, access management, and compatible speed controls can support a broader safety program, but installing them does not by itself establish compliance. Modifications or additions affecting capacity or safe operation require the manufacturer’s prior written approval under paragraph (a)(4). The applicable standard and workplace requirements remain the basis for implementation.
